Common Errors When Wearing a Suit
There are many different types and styles of suit, and finding the perfect look for yourself can feel overwhelming. Follow our tips to avoid the mistakes that are commonly made by newbie suit wearers, and pay us a visit to find the solutions for every occasion.
1. A poorly fitted suit. When you’re wearing a suit, it’s crucial to get the fit right so that you can make the most of your physique and your style. If you are considering buying a mail order suit, you’re likely to find that your suit is made of poor quality fabric and that the proportions are all wrong for your body. One of the biggest problems with the way a suit fits is the length of the jacket. A jacket that is too long will ride up at the back and create an unflattering silhouette that makes you look shorter, while a jacket that is too short for your body will look too tight. Getting the jacket length right will allow it to sit at the base of your tailbone, ensuring that it skims your silhouette and elongates the legs. It is possible to work out the length that is right for you by looking at your measurements carefully, but trying on is really the only way to see if a particular jacket is the correct length. We have an excellent tailoring service that means you can have adjustments made to any suit to ensure that the size is right and make sure that buttons are placed in the most flattering alignment for your jacket.
2. Wearing the wrong trousers. You have several options for your trousers when you are wearing a suit, from mis-matched separates to tailoring options for matching suit trousers. Low rise trousers are a mistake for most people, shortening the legs and accentuating bloating, and it’s important to remember that you want to be comfortable as well as looking good, especially if you are at an all day event! It’s worth considering different styles, so you could try on slim fitting trousers as well as regular fit to see which better suit your body shape. Many people wear trousers that are too long for them, and we recommend choosing trousers that skim the shoes or are just a centimetre or two longer than this. This is another issue that your tailor can fix, taking your suit trousers up to the right length to fit your legs correctly.
3. Over accessorising. We have shared many articles on getting your suit accessories right and this is a fun and stylish way to create a look you love. However, if you get carried away with your accessories and wear too many at one time, you may find that you spoil your look. Less is more, so concentrate on making an impact with some classic accessories that help to make your outfit unique. A pocket watch, a chic tie and some smart brogues will set your suit off to perfection and ensure that you do not create a cluttered effect that complicates your timeless look. Another top tip is to make sure that your tie is the right length, reaching the middle of your belt buckle, ensuring that the balance of your outfit is correct.
4. Wearing the wrong shoes and socks. If you have ever noticed the socks or shoes of someone wearing a suit, this is likely to be because they got it wrong and these stood out as looking odd. For instance, white socks are a fashion disaster when it comes to suits, and novelty socks can undermine your look if you are going for a formal style. If you are attending a fun event and want to bring some of your unique personality to your look, colourful socks can be a good option, but for most occasions, plain black or dark coloured socks that match your suit will give you the best results. Socks should always be pulled up so that the leg is not visible between the trousers and the sock, and it’s worth investing in comfortable socks that will keep your feet feeling fresh all day. When it comes to suit shoes, you should coordinate with the colour of your suit, bearing in mind that black and blue should never be worn together, and black and brown are usually better apart. You should match your shoes to the formality of the event you are attending, reserving your designer trainers for catwalk events only! Black or brown brogues or Oxford shoes are usually the most appropriate for wearing with a suit, although loafers are a good choice for more casual occasions and you’ll be able to pair them with other outfits throughout the year, too.
5. Buttoning your jacket incorrectly. Many people do not realise that the way you button your suit jacket can make a difference – just because a button is there, doesn’t mean you have to use it! The simple way to get your buttons right is to start with the middle button, which should always be fastened, and leave the bottom button undone. This means that if you are wearing a jacket with two buttons, you will only be fastening the top one, while if you have three or more buttons, you have some flexibility. The top button is optional and you will want to consider the occasion you are dressing for and the level of formality you want to aim for. This will enhance the shape and style of your suit and ensure that you are comfortable as well.
Following these simple rules will help to make sure your suit looks great every time you wear it and that you stand out for all the right reasons.
