How To Choose The Perfect Blazer

Do you know how to style your look for every occasion? A blazer is the perfect addition to your wardrobe this year, giving you more options for formal events so that you don’t have to rely on the same old suit. A blazer is a separate jacket, without matching trousers, allowing you to create a range of outfits by pairing it with different trousers and shirts, and it can even be worn with jeans for a more casual effect.

A blazer might be single or double breasted and can be cut in a variety of styles, using different fabrics and colours to create new effects. The type of blazer you choose will depend on your own preferences and the sort of occasions you are planning to attend. Here at Suits, we can help you to find the perfect blazer for your physique and your lifestyle and you can even investigate bespoke options to create something that reflects your unique personality.

Blazer Style

There are three styles of blazer that are popular with men across the world and these have different features so you can mix up your look when you have a selection to choose from.

  • American style: The American style blazer has two buttons and a notched lapel, with soft shoulders and patch or flap pockets. You can usually choose from blazers with centre vents or double vents, and the double vented option is generally considered more flattering.

  • Italian style: As you would expect, the Italians bring a touch of sophistication to the blazer with a lightweight fabric and a less structured cut. We love the soft shoulders and the sleek lines of this style that is flattering and looks great on all body types.

  • English style. The English blazer is, typically, more structured and has a more significant tuck at the waistline. Single or double breasted options are available and these will have notched or peak lapels respectively. English style blazers usually have double vents and tend to conjure a more formal look than the American and Italian styles.

All of these are striking styles that look great with many different styles of trousers and you can dress any of these options up or down for events from weddings to Christmas parties. We suggest trying all three styles to find out which you feel most comfortable in.

Finding the Right Fit

Ideally, your blazer will fit you well without being too loose or too tight, and if you have a larger frame, you may find that a style with a wider waist is more flattering. It’s important to make sure that your sleeves are the right length, ending at your wrist or just above. You want to aim for a style that gives you plenty of room to move but isn’t baggy and you’ll probably find that trying several options reveals the best styles for your physique.

If you are shorter, you may find that a double breasted blazer helps to elongate your silhouette, and a blazer with wider lapels can also make you look taller. A check or pattern on your blazer can be a good choice if you are short or stocky, and a slim fit in a strong colour can help to build out your frame if you are very thin. The blazer should skim over your silhouette rather than fitting too closely, and a second opinion can be helpful when you’re trying to make the choice.

If you can’t find the perfect fit immediately when you’re shopping for blazers, don’t worry because you can make the most of our tailoring services to adjust your favourite style to fit correctly. You can have the sleeves, shoulders and waist adjusted to the proportions of your body or even design a bespoke blazer to reflect your unique personality.

Styling up Your Blazer

Your blazer can be paired with smart or casual trousers to create different looks and we have a good selection of blazers to show you. Our favourites include:

The herringbone weave creates a classic look that is both warm and comfortable, giving you the perfect option for a formal occasion in the winter. It’s slim fitting and flattering for most body types, and it can be worn open with formal trousers and a statement pocket square for a classic look.

  • Bromley Stone Checked Blazer. This men’s Bromley Stone Checked Blazer is a versatile garment that can be worn in many ways, and you’ll be sure to stand out from the crowd in this pale colour with navy velvet accents to add a contemporary feel. This is a look that can work with jeans or with formal trousers for special occasions, adding a statement pocket square that complements the distinctive paisley lining.

  • Ted Tan Tweed Check Blazer. We love this classic Ted Tan Tweed Check Blazer, crafted with heritage inspired wool-mix cloth with a herringbone weave. The earthy tones are perfect for a winter walk or worn with more formal attire for a country wedding and this style can be worn over a shirt or a casual top for a dressed down look. We love the small colour pops throughout on the pocket flaps and the buttons, and you can accent these with your choice of accessories.

  • Bromley Olive Green Check Blazer. You can wear this gorgeous Bromley Olive Green Check Blazer with matching trousers and waistcoat as a suit or separately with mismatched trousers for a more casual option. It’s a slim fitting, single breasted style with a notched lapel and single back vent, and the sophisticated colour and quality fabric make it a standout item for your wardrobe.

A blazer is a great option to bring versatility and fun into your wardrobe, giving you the potential to create several outfits by accessorising and dressing your blazer up and down. You can experiment with your outfits by pairing suit jackets and blazers with casual jeans or chinos, and you can create a whole range of looks by mixing and matching your separate jackets and trousers to ensure that you turn heads for all the right reasons.
